Elwood Jones, 88, Mount Olive resident and retired businessman, passed away Friday morning, August 2, 2019 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

His life will be remembered in a service at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 4, at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Jeff Dail, followed by visitation. Interment will be in a private setting at Wayne Memorial Park. Friends and family are also welcome to call at the Jones residence. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Calypso Fire Dept., c/o Roger Davis, PO Box 56, Calypso, NC 28325, or Pleasant Grove Fire Dept., c/o Wayland Southerland, 645 Bennett’s Bridge Road, Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Mr. Jones spent his growing up years in the Red Hill community near Mount Olive. From humble beginnings, he became a successful businessman. With partner, O. W. “Tipp” Scott, Scott & Jones, Inc., a metal fabrication and mill engineering company, was founded in 1954 in the Scott’s Store community and later relocated to Calypso. For Mr. Jones, this opportunity came at a young age and would be the only place of employment that he would ever have. Known as a benevolent man who did unseen things for others without any fanfare, he was a friend to all. He and his late wife were very involved in the Mount Olive Pickle Kickers square dancing group, and he was a life member of the American Legion Post 103. He worshiped his Lord at Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Sandlin Jones; his parents, Garvis and Pennie Herring Jones; three brothers, Park “Bill” Jones, Royce “Tobe” Jones, and Kenneth “Cuz” Jones; and his beloved white poodle, Dancer.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Connie J. and Tom Preston of Holly Ridge, Bonnie J. and Ken Herring of Mount Olive, and Donna J. and Bill Dawson of Mount Olive; a sister, Evelyn J. Futrell and husband, Odom, of Deep Run; nine grandchildren, Michael Holmes and Jackie, Thomas Preston, Justin Preston and Cody Worrells, Allison Morick and James, James Holmes and Tiffany Mooring, Cody Herring and Katelyn, Erica Ginn, Zack Dawson and Elizabeth Khanjari, and Emily H. Hardison and Matt; and great-grandchildren, Elise, Trace, Adelynn, Preston, Madison, Jason, Adalyn, Raygan, Weston, Luke, and Gibson.
