Obituary for Glenda Whaley Herring

Glenda Whaley Herring, 71, of Tram Road, Mount Olive, went to be with her Lord and Saviour. Death came early Monday morning, May 27, while she was a patient at Vidant Medical Center. Though she was plagued with various health issues, perhaps her main diagnosis was that of a broken heart, having lost her husband and soulmate, Billy D. Herring, on December 3, 2017.

Glenda was the daughter of the late Raymond and Florence Taylor Whaley. She was a homemaker and had served as business secretary and bookkeeper for Herring Heating and Air from its founding in 1970 until she and her husband retired in 2006. She was a long-time, faithful member of the Brock’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, and had been active in the church choir, as a Sunday School teacher, with the ladies auxiliary, and in all phases of church activities until recently, when her health caused her to slow down.

Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Linda W. Holland, a brother, Wayne Douglas “Buster” Whaley; parents-in-law, Louis and Hazel B. Herring; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Vonda Lee H. Grady, Betty Gray H. Summerlin, Donald R. Herring, and the Rev. Vance Harrell.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda H. and David Cooke of Warsaw; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin D. and Julia Taylor Herring of Kenansville; grandchildren, Justin Cooke, Haley Cooke Rainey and husband, Ryan, Dana Herring Turnage and husband, Michael, Amberly Herring, Maxton Glenn Herring, and Holly Horne; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Ethan Turnage; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald Holland of Rocky Mount, Carol J. Whaley, the Rev. James Earl and Doris Herring, Linda K. Herring, Sandra H. Harrell, and Carolyn H. and Ray Bell, all of Mount Olive; and Bonnie H. and Doug Lambert of Faison; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Brock’s Chapel Church with the Rev. Jeff Bartlett and the Rev. James Earl Herring officiating, followed by burial in the Pate Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, and at the Herring residence at other times. Flowers are welcome, and for those wishing to make a memorial donation, the family suggests Brock’s Chapel Church, c/o Lynwood Herring, 519 Tram Road, Mount Olive NC 28365.

Remembering that Thursday, May 30, would have been her 72nd birthday, don’t you know there was cause for a huge heavenly celebration, not only because of her birthday but her recent arrival in God’s beautiful heaven where she and her beloved Billy can walk hand in hand forevermore.

A Tyndall Service.
