Obituary for Hugh Franklin Oates

Mount Olive – Hugh Franklin Oates, Sr., 91, passed away Monday January 14, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was born in Faison on September 5, 1927 to the late John Martin and Blanche Sutton Oates, and was one of eleven children.

He was a self-made man, a hard worker, smart, and loved his family dearly. At the age of 14, before he was old enough to enter WWII, he had already demonstrated his potential. He was asked by Dumas Giddens Oil Company in Goldsboro to operate the Pure Oil Station in Faison. With his father’s permission, Hugh did so while attending school. Most other men had gone off to the War. Three years later, he would be drafted himself.

Hugh was a graduate of the Piney Grove High School and was named to the Sampson County All-Tournament Basketball Team. After the War, Hugh would join other returning veterans to form the Faison Town Basketball team; he would play on that team for four years. As a guard, he shot long shots, and averaged over 20 points per game, but prided himself most in being able to get the ball to an open team mate.

Hugh was also a licensed electrician and helped wire many of the buildings for the World’s Fair in New York City in 1963/64. He was an accomplished entrepreneur and owned Oates Jewelery in Mount Olive for many years. He was also a Real Estate agent and advised numerous family and friends on land and timber sales before becoming a successful rental property owner and manager.

In 1948 he married the love of his life, the late Doris Price, daughter of Vivian and John Price of Mount Olive. They were married for 58 years and survived by their three children; Hugh Oates Jr., and wife Kate of Cape Coral, FL., Jerry Oates and his wife Cindy of Wilmington, NC., and Linda Oates Clifton and her husband David, of New Bern, NC; his sister, Hilda O. Jones of Mount Olive; and five grandchildren, Scott Oates and wife Vanessa, Katharine Oates, Lindsay Clifton Musselwhite and husband Evan, Matthew Oates, and Austen Oates. In addition to his parents and wife, Hugh was preceded in death by a grandson William Clifton.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Wayne Memorial Park.
