Obituary for Rose Barnett Kinzel

Rose Barnett Kinzel, 91, died early Tuesday morning, June 18, at her home in Dudley.

She was born to the late William Henry and Mary Mitchell Barnett in Duplin County.

She was a graduate of Warsaw High School in 1944.

She is survived by her daughters, Annette Kinzel and husband, Richard, and Catherine Scalzo and husband, Joseph; a son, Fredrick Kinzel and wife, Sandra; her grandchildren, Andrew and wife, Robin, and Allison Scalzo; a great-grandchild, Liam Scalzo; two sisters, Elizabeth Hall and Roman Thomas; a brother, John “Jay” Barnett; and several nieces and nephews.

After marrying in Raleigh, she moved to Oakland, Calif., and then in 1951, to Norfolk, Va., where she and her family were active members of Oakdale Presbyterian Church, where served as elder and deacon.

While raising her children, she was an active member of the PTA.

For several years, she served as secretary at Kempsville Presbyterian Church under the leadership of the Rev. David Anderson.

After retiring in 1978, Ed and Rose moved to Dudley, N.C.

In her home state, Rose enjoyed the fellowship of the members of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church and Dudley Christian Church.

As the great helper she was, Rose worked alongside her husband, Ed, in the building of their home, and was able to maintain that home and her lovely garden for more than 40 years.

Rose was an active member and served as president of Mount Olive Home Extension Club, where she was surrounded by several creative women of Wayne County.

For many years, she substituted teaching and tutored in Wayne County Public Schools, and was a longtime member of the VFW.

The last several years of her life, Rose loved playing on the Parks and Recreation sports team in Mount Olive, particularly the Bean Bag Baseball team.

In addition to her husband, Rose was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Hazel Rackley and Lois Price; and a brother, Ardell Barnett.

A memorial service honoring Rose’s life will be held at a later date.
