Obituary for Eleanor Howard Wilkins

Eleanor H. Wilkins

Mrs. Eleanor Howard Wilkins, 92, of Doodletown, near Summerlin’s Crossroads, Mount Olive area, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 1, 2018, at her home. She was known to many as Doodle, and while the community where she lived wasn’t named after her—it was Doodletown long before she came--she was the Doodle of Doodletown for as long as she had been there.

She was the widow of Luther J. “John” Wilkins, was a homemaker and farmer’s wife, and is regarded as being a good, Christian lady. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she was an awesome cook and was the best biscuit maker around. Until her joining Johnson Baptist Church of Warsaw in recent years, she was a long time member of Rooty Branch Original Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by four children, Ellen W. Bell of the home, Larry Wilkins and wife, Debbie “Twig”, of Kenly, Susan W. Haynes and husband, Benny, of Leicester, NC, and Jonnie W. Grantham and husband, Jeff, of Grantham; beloved grandchildren, Shannon Wilkins and significant other, Bryan Whitley, of Mount Olive, Nath Bell and significant other, Carmen Jernigan, of Kenansville, Seth Haynes and wife, Ashley, of Greer, SC, Nick Bell and wife, Shannon, of Kenansville, Darren Jones and wife, Karen, of Kenly, Ashley Walls and husband, Bruce, of Mount Olive, Dalton Grantham and wife, Rachel, and Jackson Grantham and girlfriend, Stacy Brooke, all of Grantham; 13 great-grandchildren, and one on the way. Also surviving are two sisters, Georgia Folkerts of Hampstead and Marion “Dot’ Padgett of Maple Hill; a brother, Roger Howard of Warsaw; Carol Langford, her devoted caregiver, of Mount Olive, and special neighbors who kept an eye out for “Mrs. Doodle,” Ann and Barry Stringer of Mount Olive.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wilkins was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Ruth Hardison Howard; four brothers, Kenneth, Scott, Luther, and William “Enky” Howard; and two sisters, Elizabeth Lanier and Audrey Garner.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Buck Grady, with visitation immediately following. Interment will be Friday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. in Devotional Gardens at Warsaw.
